Dead Label Revisits...
Hey everybody Dan from Dead Label here and welcome to the brand new blog “Dead Label Revisits...”
Every week we are going to get you guys to vote between a choice of 2 songs and then we will write an in depth description of what it took to bring the winning song to life.
This week just to get the ball rolling we chose a golden oldie, “It Burns Within”.
This track was actually the very first track that we worked on right after we finished recording our debut album “Sense of Slaughter”. How this whole song came about was we were at practice one day and we got a message from “Tracmix Studios” offering us a free day in the studio to try it out and since we had just finished the album we didn’t have any new material at the time. We didn’t want to miss out on a free day in the studio so we knuckled down and if memory serves me right I think we had this song written in a day. Which is insane to think about because the song is over 7 minutes long and has so many quirky rhythms and mood changes and did I mention that it is jam packed full of riffs?!
There are so many musical highlights on this track that even now after all this time hold their own to even our newer material. The melancholy 2nd verse with the talking vocal layered with some of the highest screams I think I have ever tracked in my life. Danny’s guitar solo in the mid-section on this track is one of my favourite guitar solos that Danny has tracked for any of our songs. The layered harmony with the wah, I remember when he was tracking that solo I had to pick my jaw up off the floor because it blew my mind. It’s so whacky but makes so much sense in the context of the song.
I think one of my most favourite things about the track as a whole is the total lack of fucks given when it comes to typical song structures. This song just takes those rules and throws them out the window. It has everything we can do in one song and works unbelievably well in my opinion.
Lyrically this song is all about passion. A burning passion deep inside for something you truly love. For me when I was writing the lyrics I was talking about my love for heavy metal music and love for my band. I’m not a spiritual person at all but if there was a higher power, that power put me on this earth to play music and not just any music. I was put on this earth to play HEAVY FUCKING METAL! This is my vocation, being in a band. This is what I was meant to do with my life. To be honest I never really cared if I made a single penny from playing music. Of course you dream about being able to play music as a full time job, to be able to support your family and pay your bills through music but money was never a driving force behind me being in a band. I just love to create new songs. To me the satisfaction I get from just starting out with a riff or a lyric or a melody and see that transform and take shape into a full blown song is possibly one of the most satisfying things you could do on this earth and that’s why I do it, to be creative and to share that creation with as many people as I can playing live. I both love and live for music and that is what this song is about.
It’s actually a shame that this track feel out of the live set a few years ago. I actually think I need to talk to the guys in the band to bring this song back into the arsenal. What do you guys think? Do you like the song? Do you have any fond memories from hearing it for the first time or have you ever seen us play this song live before? Let us know in the comments below!
Thanks for taking the time to read the blog and make sure to check out the polls and cast your vote for the next edition of “Dead Label Revisits...”
